Cry For Mississippi

Owner: jgurner Genre: Alternative Rock Total Plays: 25
Quick Summary:

Remake of a 2016 lament about my home state.

Media Description:

My life-long home of Mississippi has done a lot of dumb crap in its history. This song was sparked by a law passed by our legislature in 2016 which protects the state's poor, beleaguered population from the trauma of possibly having to bake a cake for a same-sex wedding. Just think of all the PTSD people have been saved from over the years...

The sad thing about it is this song is no less relevant today. During the past legislative session, the legislature decided to save girls in sports from possibly having to compete against transgender athletes. Plus, the state "Supreme" Court invalidated the state's voter initiative process that's been in place for decades immediately after the overwhelming majority of voters (about 73%) voted for medical marijuana.

So much for the voice of the people.

The original version was posted on MacJams of old and was quite a bit different. It was one of my "two hour" songs. That's how much time I spent one afternoon writing and recording it. Over the years, I've continued to play this solo (in the off-chance I ever actually perform live anywhere) and have made some changes from the original. It's quite a bit faster - I shaved almost a minute off the original length - and I made some minor alterations to the lyrics to make it less about a specific matter and more general.

Some may wonder why I have stayed here in the reddest of red states given my generally more progressive tendencies and my answer is: This is my home. My family has been here (in this same county) since just after the Revolutionary War and I have as much right to be here as the mouth-breathing, Confederate flag waving, racist deplorables who are generally the ones who get the attention whenever anyone focuses on my state. There are more people here who believe like I do than many might think, they're just quiet about it, so I decided a long time ago I would stay here and try and make this state just a little more tolerable. I don't know if I've managed that, but I'm still trying.

Cry for Mississippi

©2016 Joseph Gurner

Way down South in the land of cotton

Where old times can never be forgotten

We wave our flags to show our hate

And freedom to discriminate

We need to turn back

Before it’s too late

Cry for Mississippi

Our fear has brought us down

Cry for Mississippi

Help lift us

Off the ground

The folks in Jackson must have gone insane

Making laws that hurt us all again

We love our Bibles. We love our guns

We trash the future for our sons

We need to turn back

Or come undone

Cry for Mississippi

Our fear has brought us down

Cry for Mississippi

Help lift us

Off the ground

We tell our children our poison lies

We teach them all to despise

Don’t trust the liberals, the media too

The government is gonna come for you

We need to turn back

Yes it’s true

Cry for Mississippi

Our fear has brought us down

Cry for Mississippi

Help lift us

Off the ground
